Taiwan is a hybrid blend for lovers of culture, especially lovers of food. Most of the food scene in Taiwan is derived from Chinese cuisine with a Taiwanese take on most dishes. The island of Taiwan is home to every kind of Chinese dish one can think of. It’s also home to a variety of individual local dishes so much so that almost every city on the island has a different local dish to offer. Here’s a list of some of the best dishes that Taiwan has to offer us:
1. Steamed Spring Rolls
This dish might sound very common but au contraire, it tastes divine when had Taiwanese style. Widely eaten in the vegetarian form (cabbage and mushrooms). These rolls are available across most street vendors in Taiwan. Don/t miss out on trying one if you if you spot someone selling them!
2. Chicken on a Stick
You can order any part of the animal on a stick like hearts, wombs, and intestines and more as the Taiwanese do not believe in putting the animal to much waste. These are found at any barbecue or deep frying vending stall in the markets. You can choose from various flavors of spicy.
3. Oyster Omelette
Oyster omelets are the most common and popular snacks and can be easily found in the night markets. Eggs, oysters, flour, and onions are cooked to a gooey perfection giving a soft yet sticky texture in the mouth and accompanied by a sweet and mildly spicy dressing with cilantro.
4. Eel Noodle Soup
Eels are a special delicacy as is all seafood in Taiwan. Most restaurants have live eels in fish aquariums so you can choose your dinner. Rice eels with Yi Mein are added to a sweet and sour soup thickened by starch. This can be found in night markets.
5. Stinky Tofu
Having derived its name from the unpleasant odour it gives off, stinky tofu has been known to be a favourite of royals throughout the dynasties. It is cooked with fermenting bean curd and Nateki which explodes and leaves the mouth with a good hit. The tofu is usually marinated in vegetable and shrimp broth that has been fermenting for months. Don’t go by the name, this dish tastes divine!
6. Duck Tongue
Any part of a duck can be found as food in the island markets but duck tongues are a special delicacy and are served in a seasoned soup. One can also find stir fried varieties of duck tongue in the night markets.
7. Popcorn Chicken
Popcorn Chicken is made from deep-fried chicken which is spiced and topped with salt and pepper and seasoned with fragrantly cooked basil. It is a delicious part of the cuisine loved by all for its juicy and tender texture and is a very popular snack with both locals as well as tourists from around the world. It can be found at almost every food stall and market.
Due to a large number of followers of Buddhism, vegetarian restaurants are also found in abundance on the island.
In a nutshell, Taiwan offers us a varied platter especially with seafood and deep-fried dishes as major constituents. Some of the most exotic and unheard of delicacies are found on this small island and a large chunk of tourists visit the island mainly for their love of food. With every sort of animal to inhabit the oceans found on a plate, Taiwan is nothing short of a food lover’s very own paradise.
